I was on a Greek train on Sunday. I wouldn't have been surprised to hear the public-sector train conductor say Kalo Pascha - Happy Easter. In the States the ACLU would already have him over a barrel, but the Greek state subsidizes the church. But it did surprise me to hear him close with "Christos anesti".

I support a separation, if not a divorce, between church and state, but the question is, who gets custody of the culture? My preference is contrary to the way things have worked out here, perhaps inevitably.
